Who pays for a hire car after an accident?
If the accident was the other driver’s fault, their insurer does. Your right to a replacement vehicle while yours is being repaired was confirmed by the High Court in 2021 (Arsalan v Rixon), including a car comparable to your own. More detail in our guide: who pays for a hire car after an accident.
Like-for-like, not “whatever’s left”
A comparable car means one that suits how you actually use yours: a ute for a tradie, a seven-seater for a family, an SUV if that’s what you drive. Replacement cars are supplied by our sister company, National Hire Car, and are matched to your needs as closely as the fleet allows.
How long can I keep it?
While your car is being repaired — or, if it’s written off, until the claim for your car is settled. We keep the hire to what’s reasonable and documented, because that’s what gets claims paid without arguments.
Hire car and repairs, together
Most replacement-car companies only do the car. We also collect your damaged car and manage the repair with a partner workshop, so there’s one business handling the whole thing and the hire ends as soon as your car is ready.
