How deep is your scratch?
Car paint has layers — clear coat on top, colour underneath, then primer and metal. How a scratch is fixed depends on how many layers it’s gone through.
- Clear-coat scratches (a fingernail doesn’t catch) — usually polished out
- Paint-deep scratches (fingernail catches, colour visible) — touch-up or a localised refinish
- Through to primer or metal (white, grey or bare metal showing) — needs a proper repair and paint to stop rust
Scuffs and bumper scrapes
Scuffed bumper corners from kerbs, poles and garage walls are the most common thing we see. Plastic bumpers can usually be repaired and repainted rather than replaced. See bumper repairs.
What scratch repair costs
A light polish is at the cheap end; a deep scratch across two panels that needs blending is a bigger job. We quote from photos and confirm before any work starts. If another driver scratched your car and you know who they are, their insurer may cover it — find out how.
